Now that I am a little over three weeks into my recovery, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my experience with Dr. Hazem Alfie and the amazing and professional team at Delta Clinic. Having surgery is a significant decision, and from my very first consultation with Dr. Alfie, I felt comfortable and reassured. What stood out to me most was the time and attention he gave me before surgery. I had two consultations with him, and during both appointments he took the time to answer all of my questions, explain everything clearly, and discuss any concerns I had. I never felt rushed, and I never felt that any question was too small or unimportant. His calm approach, experience, and attention to detail gave me a great deal of confidence going into surgery. He made sure I understood what to expect and helped me feel comfortable with my decision every step of the way. I truly appreciate the care and attention he provided. I would also like to give special recognition to Rayan, who has been my main nurse throughout my recovery. Recovery can be an emotional journey, with lots of questions, worries, and moments when you need reassurance, and Rayan has been there through it all. She has followed my progress closely, answered countless questions, and guided me through each stage of recovery with patience and kindness. Knowing that someone genuinely cared about how I was doing and was always there to support me made a real difference to my recovery experience. I am incredibly grateful for all of her support and care. I would also like to thank Alex, who has been wonderful throughout this experience. Every interaction with her was positive, and she was always kind, supportive, and encouraging whenever I needed help or reassurance. Sushmita was equally lovely to deal with. She was always welcoming, helpful, and professional, and her warm attitude made every interaction a pleasant one. A special thank you as well to Hanan for reaching out after surgery to check on me. It was a thoughtful gesture that I genuinely appreciated. I am still recovering, but I already know that choosing Dr. Alfie and Delta Clinic was the right decision for me. Thank you to Dr. Alfie, Rayan, Alex, Sushmita, Hanan, and the entire team for the care, support, and kindness you have shown throughout this journey. It has meant more to me than I can express in a review. I would confidently recommend Dr. Alfie to anyone considering surgery, and I will definitely return to Delta Clinic in the future if I ever decide to have another procedure. Dr. Alfie would be my first choice without hesitation. Thank you so much for the amazing support and care🌷🌷Posted on Google![]()

i had a really good experience overall with delta clinics. from the start alex was really easy to talk to and didn’t make anything feel complicated, which helped because i was a bit unsure going into it. she always got back to me and kept things moving without any stress when i came into the clinic the reception team were polite and everything felt organised. on the day of surgery the nurses were actually really reassuring, they didn’t rush anything and made sure i was calm before going in which made a big difference dr alfie was professional and straight to the point, he explained what would actually work rather than just agreeing with everything. the results have come out really natural which is exactly what i wanted, nothing over the top if i had to say one thing, it would be that communication around one of my appointments could have been a bit clearer as i had to double check the time, and there was a bit of waiting when i arrived. not a big issue but worth mentioning overall though i’m really happy i went with them, the team were solid and the results speak for themselvesPosted on Google![]()

Treating Abdominal Muscle Separation
After Pregnancy
Diastasis recti develops when the connective tissue between the two sides of the rectus abdominis stretches and widens, allowing the muscles to move further apart. It can create a persistent central bulge or doming through the abdomen, even after pregnancy weight has reduced and overall fitness has improved.
The correct approach depends on the width, depth, and location of the separation, as well as the condition of the abdominal skin and the symptoms involved. At Delta Clinics, we assess the abdominal wall as a whole before determining whether rehabilitation, continued monitoring or diastasis recti surgery is appropriate.
What Is Diastasis Recti?
The rectus abdominis muscles run vertically down either side of the front of the abdomen. They are joined at the midline by a band of connective tissue called the linea alba. During pregnancy or sustained abdominal stretching, the linea alba can become thinner and wider, increasing the distance between the muscles.
Diastasis recti is not the same as an abdominal hernia. A hernia involves tissue or an organ pushing through a defect in the abdominal wall, whereas diastasis involves widening and reduced tension along the midline without a true hole. The two can coexist, which is why a suspected hernia requires proper assessment.
What Are the Symptoms of Diastasis Recti?
Diastasis recti does not cause identical symptoms in everyone. Some people are primarily concerned by the appearance of the abdomen, while others notice reduced support or difficulty controlling pressure through the core.
Signs and symptoms can include:
- A visible ridge or dome along the centre of the abdomen
- Bulging that becomes clearer when sitting up, coughing or straining
- A persistent rounded abdominal contour after pregnancy
- Reduced tension through the central abdominal wall
- Difficulty engaging the core during movement or exercise
- A feeling of weakness or instability through the midsection
- Discomfort during activities that increase abdominal pressure
- Loose abdominal skin alongside the muscle separation
- An umbilical or other abdominal hernia occurring in the same area
What Causes Diastasis Recti?
Pregnancy is the main cause because the abdominal wall must expand to accommodate the growing uterus. Hormonal changes also soften the connective tissues, allowing the midline to stretch further as pregnancy progresses.
Factors associated with abdominal separation include:
- Pregnancy, particularly during the later stages
- Multiple pregnancies
- Twin or multiple pregnancy
- A larger baby or greater abdominal expansion
- Previous diastasis recti that did not fully resolve
- Repeated increases in abdominal pressure
- Significant changes in weight
- Reduced tissue elasticity
- Natural differences in connective-tissue strength
- Abdominal surgery or an existing abdominal-wall weakness
Why Choose Delta Clinics for
Diastasis Recti Surgery?
Diastasis recti surgery requires a clear understanding of the abdominal wall beneath the visible bulge. Skin laxity, muscle separation, fat distribution, scars and possible hernias must be assessed together before the extent of repair can be planned.
Patients choose Delta Clinics for diastasis recti assessment and surgery because we provide:
Detailed examination of the upper and lower abdominal wall
Careful distinction between diastasis recti, loose skin, localised fat and hernia
Full and mini tummy tuck techniques selected according to the extent of separation
Abdominal muscle repair incorporated where clinically appropriate
Body-contouring plans that consider the abdomen, waist and flanks together
Clear discussion of incision placement, recovery and future pregnancy
Surgery in fully equipped clinical facilities
Structured follow-up throughout abdominal-wall and wound healing
Realistic guidance about function, contour and the limits of surgery
How We Assess Diastasis Recti
Assessment involves examining the abdomen while the muscles are relaxed and contracted. Your surgeon will evaluate the width and depth of the separation, the quality of tension across the linea alba, and whether the gap affects the upper or lower abdomen, or both.
We also assess the amount of loose skin, the distribution of abdominal fat, the position of the belly button and any scars from previous surgery. If a hernia is suspected or the anatomy is unclear, further investigation can be arranged. Future pregnancy plans are also important because another pregnancy can stretch a repaired abdominal wall and affect the result.
Diastasis Recti Treatment Options
Diastasis recti treatment is selected according to the width and location of the separation and whether it extends across the upper or lower abdomen. The following options address different degrees of muscle separation and abdominal laxity.
Tummy Tuck With Abdominal Muscle Repair
A tummy tuck provides access to the full abdominal wall, allowing the widened tissue between the muscles to be tightened with internal sutures. The procedure also removes loose abdominal skin and repositions the remaining tissue, making it the principal surgical option when diastasis recti occurs alongside broader changes after pregnancy or weight loss.
Mini Tummy Tuck for Limited Lower Abdominal Separation
A mini tummy tuck treats the area below the belly button through a shorter lower-abdominal incision. It can incorporate limited muscle repair when mild separation is confined to the lower abdomen, but it cannot provide full access to diastasis extending through the upper abdominal wall.
Exercise and Specialist Physiotherapy
Specialist physiotherapy focuses on breathing, posture, pelvic floor coordination, and controlled activation of the deeper abdominal muscles. This can improve core control and the way pressure is managed through the abdomen, but exercise cannot remove excess skin and does not reliably close every wide or established separation.
Book a Diastasis Recti Consultation
If abdominal separation continues to cause doming, reduced support or a persistent change in contour, a surgical assessment can establish its extent and whether repair is appropriate. Contact Delta Clinics to arrange a consultation:

Diastasis Recti FAQs
How can I check for diastasis recti at home?
A central gap or ridge can become visible when you lie down and gently lift your head or shoulders, but a self-check cannot establish the full width, depth or strength of the abdominal wall. A clinician or specialist physiotherapist can assess the entire midline and determine whether a hernia or another cause of abdominal bulging is present.
When should diastasis recti be assessed by a surgeon?
Surgical assessment is appropriate when a persistent or severe diastasis recti remains after rehabilitation, particularly when it results in pronounced doming or is accompanied by substantial loose skin. Assessment is also important if you suspect a hernia or are considering abdominoplasty for changes following pregnancy or weight loss.
Is diastasis recti the same as a hernia?
No. Diastasis recti is a widening and thinning of the tissue between the abdominal muscles, while a hernia is a defined defect through which tissue can protrude. A clinical examination can distinguish between them and identify when both conditions are present.
Is muscle repair included in every tummy tuck?
No. Muscle repair is performed when examination confirms separation or laxity that requires correction. A tummy tuck can still be undertaken primarily for excess skin where the abdominal wall has retained adequate tension.
Can diastasis recti return after surgery?
A repaired abdominal wall can stretch again following pregnancy, substantial weight gain or repeated pressure on the healing tissues. Following activity restrictions during recovery and maintaining a stable weight helps protect the repair.
Should I wait until after pregnancy to have diastasis recti surgery?
Yes, surgery is generally planned once your family is complete because a future pregnancy can stretch the abdominal wall again. If another pregnancy is possible, physiotherapy can help manage core control and symptoms in the meantime.
Does diastasis recti surgery improve core strength?
Repair restores tension across the abdominal midline and can improve abdominal-wall support. Strength and function also depend on the wider core, pelvic floor, back, breathing mechanics and rehabilitation, so surgery does not replace appropriate exercise after healing.
What scar does diastasis recti repair leave?
When repair is completed during a tummy tuck, the main scar runs horizontally across the lower abdomen. Its length depends on the amount of skin removed and the type of tummy tuck required, while a full abdominoplasty also creates a scar around the repositioned belly button.
How long does recovery take after diastasis recti surgery?
Internal muscle repair requires protection while the tissues heal, so lifting and strenuous abdominal exercises are restricted for several weeks. Most people gradually resume normal daily activities during the early recovery period, with exercise reintroduced according to healing and their surgeon’s advice.
Is diastasis recti surgery available on the NHS?
Surgery for diastasis recti is not routinely funded when the concern is primarily cosmetic. NHS assessment may be appropriate when there is a suspected hernia or another clinical problem, while local funding decisions for abdominal wall repair depend on individual criteria.
