What is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction, also known as boob reduction or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgery that aims to reduce the size of women’s breast tissues. It involves removal of excess skin, fat and gland followed by reshaping the breasts to become more round, firmer, and perky. Breast reduction surgery also involves moving the nipple and areola up to sit at the centre of the new breast. If the areola is large, it would be reduced at the same time of the surgery.
Breast reduction improves body figure, balances the waist to bust ratio and helps relief the pain often encountered by the heavy breasts leading to neck pain, muscle strain and bra lines on the shoulders. Some patients may suffer with infections and skin conditions underneath their large breasts and hence the surgery will help minimise that risk.
It is one of the most popular surgeries performed by plastic and breast surgeons in the UK and internationally.
Why Should Patients Consider Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery has proven to help with the following:
- Improves back and neck pain.
- Treats deep bra lines on the shoulders.
- Enhances patient confidence and ability to wear suitable desired clothes and bikinis.
- Regains patient confidence to engage in social and sports events like swimming, running etc.
Deciding on Your New Breast Cup Size
Before embarking on breast reduction surgery, patients should spend some time considering their body shape, the size of their breasts and the relationship between the breast and tummy. Nice appearance is often related to ratios and not sizes. Patients with big heavy boobs tend to ask for a very small breast cup. This is proven to be a direct result of the suffer they have due to the weight and shape of their big breasts.
We recommend our patients to speak to their surgeons before deciding on the new desired cup size to make sure they decide on the right cup that would suit their body frame.
Do I Need Breast Uplift With the Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery would normally involve uplift of the new breast tissues, anchoring the gland to the chest wall to prevent future droopiness and reduction the size of areola if it has stretched due to the weight of the breast tissues.
Do I Need Drains After Breast Reduction Surgery?
At Delta Clinics, our surgeon will discuss with the patients the possibilities of using a drain during surgery. Drains help suck out any fluid or blood in the first few hours after surgery. This helps with less bruises, swelling and early recovery.
How Long Is the Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery takes 2- 3 hours.
